Dental Care
Just Cats offers comprehensive dental care for your cat including teeth cleaning, polishing, dental x-rays, tooth extractions and oral surgery.
The dental exam is performed during the cat’s annual exam. If the doctor recommends a dental cleaning at that time, and it can be scheduled, plan to leave your pet for the day.
Here are some details regarding a dental cleaning:
- You’ll drop off your kitty (who has been fasted overnight) around 8 a.m. Our animal caretaker will check your cat in by weighing him or her and checking for fleas. Your pet will then be placed into a comfy cage with a towel and litter box to wait for the procedure.
- Anesthesia is administered by injection. We use the most up-to-date anesthetic protocols specifically for cats, allowing a safe and painless procedure.
- Before the doctor examines your cat’s mouth, one of our experienced licensed veterinary technicians will probe each tooth to check for pockets or recession. We are able to take dental x-rays to assess the roots of the teeth. If extractions are needed, they will be performed and usually sutured—unless disease or infection is present. X-rays give the doctor more information about the roots and bone and may result in saving a tooth.
- After any problems are addressed, the teeth are cleaned by ultrasonic scaling, hand scaling, and curetting. Polishing, the last step, creates a smooth surface on the crown of the tooth.
