Vaccinations

Vaccinations are important for the health of your pet.

As a means of decreasing the incidence of sarcomas and to more effectively protect the health of the public and of our feline friends, our veterinarians customize vaccination protocols for your cat’s specific situation.

Rabies vaccinations for domesticated animals are required by law. We prefer to use a one-year PUREVAX vaccine, which has been shown to be the safest of the available vaccines and the least likely to cause feline sarcomas. (Feline sarcomas are a form of cancer caused by the adjutant that propels the vaccine into the cat’s system. Research is ongoing, and the doctors at Just Cats keep current on new developments.)

Distemper (panleukopenia) is a contagious viral disease that is preventable by vaccination. Our distemper vaccine includes the following components: calici, rhinotracheitis, and panleukopenia. We recommend vaccinating for these diseases on all indoor and outdoor cats. Our veterinarians will discuss vaccines and customize a vaccine schedule for your cat.

Feline leukemia is a blood disease that cats can acquire from their mother or via saliva or blood from an infected cat. Vaccinating for leukemia is indicated in all outdoor cats. We recommend testing for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) before vaccinating.

Feline immunodeficiency virus is also called kitty AIDS. Similar to human HIV, though in no way transmittable to people, it shuts down the cat’s immune system, potentially making even a simple cold life-threatening.

No vaccine is 100% effective at preventing all disease.
